About OzInDi

A connected network for Australian independent entertainment.

OzInDi was created by Joel Devereux and Barry “Baz” Koch after years of seeing how often the systems built around creative industries failed to provide meaningful support to the people making the work.

The change came...

After serving as president and treasurer of a community radio station, Joel and Barry saw first-hand how difficult it could be for emerging Australian musicians to receive meaningful support. That frustration became the foundation for OzInDi Radio Australia—a dedicated platform where artists could be programmed because of the quality of their work, rather than the size of their social-media following, advertising budget or ability to satisfy an algorithm.

The same barriers existed across the independent screen industry. Filmmakers can spend years developing and financing their projects, only to face further submission fees, limited screening opportunities and festival models that cannot provide an ongoing home for their work. Joel created the not-for-profit OzInDi Entertainment Network to provide another pathway for Australian documentaries, factual series and independent non-fiction productions, without charging selected creators simply to have their work considered or exhibited.

Social media once promised creators direct access to audiences, but increasingly placed discovery behind algorithms, paid promotion and constantly changing platform rules. Too often, organisations offering “exposure” created more work for artists while giving them little control over how their projects were presented, discovered or supported.

OzInDi was built around the belief that radio, film, television, music, performance and digital production should not operate in isolation. Musicians need filmmakers, filmmakers need performers, and every creative discipline benefits from working alongside the others. The network brings these communities together to develop, exhibit and promote Australian work outside audience paywalls, advertising-driven systems and social-media algorithms.

Our purpose is to return greater control to Australian creators, build practical pathways between production and audiences, and develop a network that contributes directly to the people creating Australian culture—not simply the platforms distributing it.
