OzInDi Radio Australia
Big Sound 2024 Podcast - Holly Hebe
As the vibrant streets of Brisbane come alive with the pulse of creativity this September, two passionate radio advocates from Far North Queensland are making their way south, ready to shake up the industry at Big Sound 2024. Barry “Baz” Koch and Joel “Deveski” Devereux, the dynamic duo behind OzInDi Radio Australia, are on a mission—to reimagine community radio for a new generation.
Baz and Deveski’s journey began in the trenches of community radio, where they quickly became disillusioned by the limitations of the medium. “Traditional community radio has always been a double-edged sword,” Baz reflects. “It’s a platform for local voices, sure, but it’s often bogged down by outdated practices, limited reach, and an inability to connect with the younger demographic.” Deveski, who spent years in commercial radio before teaming up with Baz, nods in agreement. “We saw the same barriers over and over—stifled creativity, a lack of support for emerging artists, and a system that was falling behind the times. It is also prone to entrenchment which causes the environment to be toxic and unwelcoming, which also prevents younger generations allowed to be involved.”
Their frustration gave birth to OzInDi Radio Australia, an online platform that’s more than just a station—it’s a movement. Catering specifically to youth, indie musicians, and music lovers across the country, OzInDi offers an inclusive space where new voices can be heard, and where music from the heart of Australia can thrive.
Big Sound 2024, taking place from September 3rd to 6th, is the ideal stage for Baz and Deveski to present their revolutionary platform. Held in the bustling Fortitude Valley, this four-day event is more than just a music festival; it’s the premier gathering of Australia’s music industry heavyweights, a crucible of networking, discovery, and innovation. “Big Sound is where the industry’s pulse is felt,” says Deveski. “It’s where trends are set, careers are launched, and ideas that change the landscape of music are born.”
With over 150 artists set to perform, including names like Keli Holiday, Alex The Astronaut, Stand Atlantic, Gretta Ray and more, Big Sound offers a range of different opportunities for independent musicians. For Baz and Deveski, it’s the perfect opportunity to connect with musicians, producers, and fellow creatives who are as passionate about the future of music as they are.
What sets OzInDi Radio Australia apart from traditional radio is its focus on interactivity and accessibility. The platform is designed not just for listeners, but for musicians too. Through their soon-to-launch app, users can log in as either a “Music Creator” or “Music Lover,” creating a personalized experience that’s tailored to their needs. Features like an artist profiles section for interactivity with fans and new listener’s (more features to be announced over the next 12 months), “like list” for saved artists, real-time schedules, ensure that users are always in tune with their favorite tracks and shows.
But it’s not just about the tech. At its core, OzInDi is about community—a digital space where artists can connect with fans, where new music is discovered daily, and where the Australian indie scene is given the platform it deserves. “We’re not just radio presenters, we’re advocates,” Baz says. “We’re here to champion the artists who are putting their blood, sweat, and tears into their music, and to give them the exposure they need.”
As Baz and Deveski prepare to descend on Brisbane, they’re not just attending Big Sound—they’re ready to make waves. Their goal? To spread the word about OzInDi Radio Australia and to show the industry that the future of radio is online, interactive, and fiercely independent.
Big Sound 2024 is more than just a chance to showcase their platform; it’s an opportunity to inspire others in the creative space to think outside the box, to break free from the constraints of traditional media, and to embrace the limitless possibilities of the digital age. “We’re here to connect, to collaborate, and to bring OzInDi to the forefront of Australia’s music scene,” Deveski says. “Big Sound is where it all happens, and we’re ready.”
As the countdown to Big Sound begins, all eyes are on Baz and Deveski. With their unwavering passion and innovative spirit, they’re not just attending the festival—they’re redefining the future of Australian radio.
